Help and support

Everything you need to set up Botsense, choose how it responds to bots, and get help from a person.
Set up in three steps
- Install from Shopify. Add Botsense from the Shopify App Store and approve the permissions.
- Turn on the Botsense app embed. In your admin go to Online Store, then Themes, then Customize. Open App embeds, switch Botsense on, and click Save. Botsense needs an online store to work.
- Open Botsense in your admin. The app home shows the visits, checkouts, orders and sign-ups it has labeled, each with a plain-English reason.
What Botsense does
Botsense labels each visit, checkout, order and sign-up as human, suspect, or bot. Labeling is free. It adds tags to orders and customers in your Shopify admin so you can filter and review them. On the Pro plan, Botsense can also hold fulfillment on orders it has proven to come from bots, and can stop proven bots at checkout. Both start in a test period where Botsense only records what it would have done.
Choose how Botsense responds
Open Botsense in your admin and pick a protection level. Holding and blocking are part of the Pro plan.
- Label only. Botsense tags suspect and bot activity and never holds an order or blocks a checkout. This is the default.
- Hold bot orders. Botsense places a fulfillment hold on orders it has proven to come from bots, so nothing ships until you decide.
- Also block at checkout. As well as holding orders, Botsense stops sessions it has proven to be bots from completing checkout.
- Test first. When this option is on, Botsense only shows what it would have done. No order is held and no checkout is blocked. Turn it off when you are happy with what you see.
Review or release a held order
- Open the order in your Shopify admin. Held orders carry a Botsense tag.
- Scroll to the fulfillment section of the order.
- Choose Release hold. The order can then be fulfilled as normal. Release it if you know the order is genuine.
Keep fake sign-ups out of your emails
Botsense tags customers it labels as bots with botsense:bot, and suspect ones with botsense:suspect. In Shopify, create a customer segment that excludes the botsense:bot tag, and send your campaigns to that segment. If you use Shopify Flow, you can also build a workflow that reacts to the tag. Tagging customers is on whenever tagging is turned on in Botsense settings.
Common questions
- Does it slow my store? Botsense runs a small script from the theme app embed, and checkout never waits for it.
- What about VPN, privacy browser, screen reader and remote desktop users? One trait on its own is not enough to call a visitor a bot. Botsense only holds or blocks when the evidence shows an automated browser, and your test period lets you check this before anything is live.
- What data is stored? No customer names, emails or addresses. Read the privacy policy for the full list and retention times.
- What if Botsense is offline? Your store and checkout keep working as if the app were not installed.
- How do I uninstall? In your admin go to Settings, then Apps, find Botsense and choose Uninstall. Botsense data is kept for 30 days and then deleted. Tags already written to your orders and customers stay in Shopify until you remove them.
